📝 Dallas Fuel: The return of a champion

After three years offline, the Dallas Fuel have officially made their return to official international competition since the end of the 2023 Overwatch League season.

Despite this storied franchise returning to the Overwatch season, many fans and analysts alike were sceptical about the long-term success of their initial roster. But all those concerns were quickly washed away when the Fuel finished the Regular Season at a perfect 5-0, only dropping five maps in their journey.

While other teams around the world have shifted their playstyles with the meta, the Dallas Fuel have instead focused on their players’ strengths and individual talents. While heroes like Zarya and D.Va have been dominant picks in all regions, tank player Kim "Kellan" Min-jae has instead stuck to his signature Wrecking Ball and Winston as the spear for Dallas’ unconventional strategy.

The same sentiments can also be extended to the backline. Both support players have shown the capabilities needed to play the ever-strong Lucio/Kiriko backline, but rather than staying rigid in this combination, the Fuel have been successful in executing a range of double-flex support styles with heroes like Illari and Baptiste. Dallas have pulled this off thanks to the flexibility of support veteran Luke "Lukemino" Fish, who has played both support roles across a variety of metas in Overwatch’s history and has found great synergy with Christopher "Cjay" Smith.

This has also allowed both Rocco "Kronik" Iacobacci and Park "SeonJun" Seon-jun to completely take over lobbies, making a convincing case as the strongest DPS core in North America.

As Kronik said back in Week 3, the Fuel have consistently thrown curveballs at their opponents, which was one of the biggest factors that secured their spot at the Champions Clash. In their playoff run, the Fuel won all but two maps and defeated Spacestation Gaming in a dominant 4-1 series.

The Dallas Fuel’s first match in Tokyo will be against Crazy Raccoon, the #2 seed from Asia and an OWCS powerhouse. It’s an exciting prospect to see whether the Fuel stick to their guns, and more importantly, whether their guns will be effective against the Cat/Bastion comps that took over Asia towards the end of Stage 1.

The Envy organisation is no stranger to championships, especially seeing as both the original Envy team and Dallas Fuel have a pedigree of podium finishes across Overwatch’s 10-year history. As they make their first journey to international competition since the 2023 OWL season, the Dallas Fuel stand at the precipice of a glorious run through the Champions Clash, if they can overcome the early but insurmountable obstacle ahead of them.
