Every hero change that could swing the World Cup playoffs
Blizzard's midseason balance update dropped days before the Overwatch World Cup playoffs, reshaping several heroes that defined the Group Stage in Busan.
D.Mon received several consequential adjustments. Plasma Saber's damage drops from 65 to 60, and Portable Fusion Repeater's minimum falloff range falls from 30 to 20 metres, cutting her long-range output. In exchange, the weapon's spread tightens from 2 to 1.75 degrees and Call Mech's transformation duration nearly halves, from 1.95 to 0.95 seconds. D.Mon was among the most-picked heroes of the Group Stage, France in particular, and the changes reward closer engagements rather than removing her from the equation.
Symmetra's Teleporter takes a direct hit, with placement range reduced from 30 to 25 metres and the reuse cooldown lengthened from 1 to 1.25 seconds. That has obvious implications for Saudi Arabia. The team fielded Ibrahem "Quartz" Alali and Abdulelah "LBBD7" Alfaifi DPS duo in the group stage, but Ahmad "Youbi" Alyoubi was widely expected to feature in the playoffs, given how often Saudi Arabia's best form has come through Symmetra compositions in the past.
Baptiste is the clearest winner. Immortality Field's cooldown drops from 22 to 20 seconds, its health rises from 125 to 150, and the threshold at which it keeps allies alive increases from 20% to 25%. All three changes push in the same direction, and the United States' Landon "Landon" McGee is among those best placed to capitalise.
Jetpack Cat sees Biotic Pawjectiles reduced from 4.5 to 4 damage and healing per projectile, while stuns and mobility-locking effects on a carried target now disconnect Lifeline entirely. Nearly every team leaned on the hero in some form during the Group Stage, and that last change introduces a counterplay window that did not previously exist. A follow-up hotfix also arrived on September 10, addressing a Jetpack Cat bug that allowed Purr to pass through enemy barriers.
Kiriko's nerfs may prove the most far-reaching. Healing Ofuda's travel speed falls from 24 to 18 metres per second, with seeking range cut from 35 to 30 metres, while Protection Suzu's invulnerability window shortens from 0.65 to 0.5 seconds and its radius shrinks from 5 to 4 metres. As one of the most universally adopted heroes in the game, the changes could tip the flex support balance towards Ana and Baptiste.
Mauga also loses durability and dual-wield range, with base armor down from 150 to 125 and damage falloff when firing both guns starting at 10 metres instead of 15.
How all of this plays out will be clear in less than two days. However, uncertainty now hangs over the playoffs, with every team facing the same question: how quickly can they adapt, find new compositions that work, and come out on top?
There are also various changes to heroes who haven't featured much at the professional level lately, so catch the full patch notes here.
