📝 Korea Week 1 fantasy preview

by Joe "Cryptographer" Peters, Artemis, and SkanGX

Welcome to the first in our weekly series of articles, where we will preview the weekend ahead in OWTV Fantasy. Our goal is two-fold: to offer some thought-provoking options for your team, and help keep you up to date with any major developments that might affect fantasy. We will do this by looking at the fixtures for the week, players we think offer notably good value, and any other clever ideas we cook up! We’ll also play along each week with a team picked by our writing staff.

Fixture review

If you’re looking to review the fixtures yourself, we’ve included a full Fixture Difficulty Rating (FDR) to help you visualise them and make your own decisions. We’ve pre-colored them according to our own opinions:

  • Green indicates what we think should be a favoured match
  • Yellow indicates a matchup that could go either way
  • Red indicates little upset potential

We think Team Falcons, Crazy Raccoon, and ZETA DIVISION are the standout teams to target this week. They’ll all face each other this week, and they all should be close matches. ZETA in particular look especially appealing.

Poker Face are another team to keep an eye on, with matchups against Cheeseburger and New Era that should be competitive and offer solid scoring potential.

It’s also worth noting that ONSIDE GAMING look to be a reliable long-term option. They will consistently face one top-four team and one bottom-four team each week; given their position right in the middle of the pack, they remain a viable pick throughout the whole stage.

Fantasy metawatch

The tank meta is pretty open right now, but D.Va especially seems quite prominent in multiple comps. Ramattra, Zarya and Sigma also seem viable. We expect tanks with the Initiatore sub-role to do well in fantasy since their self-healing might score some crucial extra points. It just so happens that traditionally, initiator tanks such as D.Va, Winston, and Wrecking Ball are pretty popular in Korea.

The DPS meta seems to revolve all around Emre at the moment. The sheer volume of damage that Emre puts out, even in losing maps, is something that fantasy managers must consider to stay competitive. Not all hitscan players will pick Emre, and we don’t yet have data to support whether Emre will see significant playtime in Korea compared to the West. In Korea, however, we have seen Symmetra and double flex comps being played in early scrims, so a double-flex DPS gambit is completely viable.

The approach to supports is similar to NA/EMEA fantasy. It’s usually a good idea to prioritise flex supports as they have historically scored better than their main support counterparts. However, if you sign a main support player who also plays heroes other than Lucio, they can provide excellent value, Viol2t, for example.

Cost-effective players

Part of balancing your fantasy roster is recognising that you can’t just pick all top-cost players. You need to find some budget options to fill out your roster, and we’ve selected a player from each role to help highlight a few valid options.

  • Tank: Attack, RØDE ONSIDE GAMING (cost: 20)

Attack is our tank value pick for the week. RØDE ONSIDE GAMING sit just below the top tier but comfortably above the rest, making them a strong team to target. As a D.Va player, Attack benefits from the Initiator passive, adding extra healing stats to boost his scores. With a balanced schedule of one top team and one lower-tier team each week, he offers both consistency and a solid set-and-forget option.

  • DPS: KNIFE, ZETA DIVISION (cost: 20)

KNIFE stands out as a reliable DPS option at his price point. As part of a two-DPS roster, he’s guaranteed playtime every week, making him a strong pick. His stability, combined with his cost, makes him one of the better value options among top teams.

  • Support: Irony, RØDE ONSIDE GAMING (cost: 19)

Irony is a solid mid-priced flex support option. Playing with RØDE ONSIDE GAMING, he benefits from the same balanced schedule as Attack, offering consistent opportunities to score. His role and price make him a well-rounded value pick for the position.

  • Honourable mention: M1nut2, Poker Face (cost: 17)

M1nut2 is a decent budget hitscan option, especially with the recent Emre changes (assuming he will roll out on Emre). While Poker Face expect a tough match against Team Falcons, their game against New Era provides a more favourable opportunity. This mix gives him a reasonable floor with some upside potential.

OWTV Fantasy staff team

OWTV fantasy staff team for OWCS Fantasy Korea
  • Attack - Tank (cost:20)
  • Proper - DPS (cost: 24)
  • M1nut2 - DPS (cost:17)
  • Shu - Support (cost: 23)
  • Faith - Support (cost: 16)

Proper and Shu both benefit from ZETA’s tough schedule this week, with matches expected to be really close. These competitive series usually score a lot of fantasy points, making them key targets for Week 1.

Faith is a budget-enabler pick that frees up funds for premium players, despite his limited scoring potential as a main support. He has one potentially close match and one likely stomp, offering a bit of balance. If you're looking for a budget-enabling flex support, New Era’s Secret is also a viable alternative with a slightly easier schedule, but less scoring potential in close games.

Attack and M1nut2 were both discussed in detail above. Note that in Week 2, M1nut2 faces two tough fixtures, so an alternative is to field a non-playing budget option, such as Haksal.

We will compete alongside you using this very team under the name Fantasy Watchpoint. So, as an extra challenge, see if you can beat the OWTV in-house fantasy masterminds, and we will see you on the leaderboards!
