OWL champion smurf returns to OWCS, joins DSG alongside Ryan and Alex
Disguised have revealed their roster for OWCS NA Stage 3, adding DPS players Ryan "Ryan" Lawless and Alex "alex" George, and completing the return of veteran tank Yoo "smurf" Myeong-hwan. The two arrive for the final stage of what has been a difficult debut season for the organisation.
smurf’s signing is a major move for Disguised. smurf’s time on the San Francisco Shock is nothing short of legendary. Alongside fellow main-tank Matthew "super" DeLisi and similarly acclaimed off-tank Choi "ChoiHyoBin" Hyo-bin, the tank line dominated throughout 2019 and 2020, becoming back-to-back OWL champions.
Despite his prowess and skill, his split playtime held him back, keeping him from Role Star awards and MVP consideration. After a relatively disappointing 2021 season, he left San Francisco and joined Seoul Dynasty.
Returning home to his native country, smurf put together one of his best seasons yet, winning the 2022 Kickoff Clash and earning his first-ever Role Star award. Seoul would finish 4th overall in 2022. smurf ended his OWL career with another fourth-place finish with Boston Uprising.
In the inaugural OWCS season, smurf joined Team Falcons. Alongside Choi "Hanbin" Han-been as his tank partner, smurf dominated throughout the season, finishing first in both OWCS Korea stages and winning the 2024 Grand Finals in Stockholm, Sweden. This would be his third Grand Finals victory, making smurf the only player to ever win three Grand Finals (Kim "Rascal" Dong-jun has two wins as a player, and one as a coach). smurf then announced his retirement from the sport in order to complete his mandatory military service in Korea.
smurf joins Disguised as the second tank player on the roster alongside Alexander "Tred" Madgwick-Smith, who tanked every map for DSG in both stages so far. smurf arriving as the more renowned option will certainly raise some obvious questions. Next weekend will show whether DSG plans to rotate both tanks or seat one as a sub.
Disguised’s second signing, to replace Julian “Rokit” Pizana, is Ryan, who joins the team after last playing for The Kafe, which Disguised eliminated from OWCS in the Stage 2 Promotion/Relegation tournament in August. At 20, he has already built a substantial OWCS résumé despite never competing for a Partner Team, and his Stage 2 performances stood out on a roster that ultimately fell short.
The move to Disguised represents Ryan’s clearest opportunity yet to prove himself at the top of the region, and he does so alongside one of the most decorated tank players the game has produced.
Disguised wrapped up the trio of signings by adding alex to the roster as a substitute. This is alex's first dip into OWCS. The flex-DPS most recently represented Canada on the world stage at the OWWC Group Stage in Busan, where he proved his chops mostly on Tracer, Bastion, and Mei.
The additions follow a turbulent stretch for Disguised. The organisation parted ways with head coach Alex "ByZenith" Ames in July, lost assistant coach Ethan "Capitology" Walker days later, and released flex DPS Julian "Rokit" Pizana in August.
Together, these changes follow a debut year spent at the bottom of the table. Disguised finished last in both Stage 1 and Stage 2, surviving on each occasion by placing second in the subsequent Promotion/Relegation tournament. Stage 3 represents their last chance to post a result in 2026 before questions about the organisation's longer-term future in Overwatch come into focus.
OWCS NA Stage 3 begins on October 10.
