The Overwatch World Cup Group Stage is underway, and the 16 remaining teams will battle it out across four days in Busan, South Korea, for the opportunity to advance to the playoffs at BlizzCon.

Day one brought us a handful of statement sweeps and an upset that few saw coming. Here's how all six matches played out.

Mexico 0 - 3 Great Britain

The opening match of the Overwatch World Cup was interrupted by a technical issue, forcing a full restart with the teams tied 1-1 in subrounds. Mexico's strong start from before the reset didn't carry over, as Great Britain took Nepal 2-0 to seize control of the series.

From there, Great Britain never let up, closing out the series 3-0 to open Group Stage play with a statement win. Mexico will need to regroup quickly with only two games remaining in the Group Stage.

China 1 - 3 USA

Billed as one of the tightest matchups of the Group Stage, USA vs. China turned lopsided fast. With a great pairing between Landon “Landon” McGee and Luke “Lukemino” Fish locking down the backline on Kiriko/Ana, USA controlled for most of the series.

China's lone map win came via Elliot “Tr33” Chu's uncommon Sierra pick, but it wasn't enough to slow USA down as they closed out the series 3-1.

Saudi Arabia 3 - 0 Australia

Reigning World Cup champions and tournament favourites Saudi Arabia gave Australia no room to breathe. Between Ibrahim “Quartz” Alali, Abdulelah “LBBD7” Alfaifi, and Ziyad “ZIYAD” Alkathiri, a dream roster for many, KSA dismantled Australia with ease.

Only Riley “cuFFa” Brown offered any real resistance for Australia, but it wasn't enough to prevent a clean 3-0 sweep for the defending champions.

Canada 3 - 2 Germany

Canada pulled off the day's biggest upset, edging out Group 3 favourites Germany in a nail-biter that went the distance. The loss is a heavy blow to Germany's hopes of advancing from Group 3, with their closer matchup against Spain still ahead.

The match also marked cal's return to the main stage, his first appearance since switching to Marvel Rivals in late 2024, as Canada closed it out 3-2.

Thailand 0 - 3 Spain

The second of Group 3's favourites lived up to the billing. Sylvia “Santy”, Jesús “Galaa” Núñez López, and Christian “Khenail” Ríos led the charge, while Daniel “xzodyal” Castro continued to impress ahead of his Stage 3 OWCS return.

Spain swept Thailand 3-0, putting themselves in the driver's seat of Group 3 alongside Canada.

Sweden 3 - 0 Japan

In the day's marquee matchup in Group 1, the so-called group of death, Sweden didn't put a foot wrong across three maps. Kevin “kevster” Persson returned to his iconic Tracer, a switch back from the hitscan-focused role he's played since joining Virtus.pro, and delivered an MVP performance.

Alongside William “WillyS” Ersson, Leo-Kristian “Zorrow” Sundin, and Estonia's Swede of the day Oliver “Admiral” Vahar, Sweden closed out Japan 3-0 to move into the group's top spot alongside USA.
