Overwatch World Cup Cheer Rally brings esports into Season 4
Blizzard used the Season 4: Heroes of Busan Developer Update to reveal the World Cup Cheer Rally, an in-game event that lets players back one of the Overwatch World Cup's three conferences and earn rewards for doing so.
The rally runs from September 1 to 14, and the developers framed it as the first in-game esports event.
The timing puts the event squarely between the two halves of the World Cup. The Group Stage lands in Busan first, with the Playoffs following at BlizzCon 2026.
How the Cheer Rally works
Players earn Cheer by completing in-game challenges or by watching eligible Overwatch esports broadcasts, then choose where to spend it.
Three reward tracks sit behind the event, one each for AMER, EMEA, and ASIA. Players can pour everything into a single conference or spread their Cheer across all three, and every contribution pushes that conference's track further along.
Each track carries Battle Pass XP, Loot Boxes, Esports Loot Boxes, titles, and a pair of regional hero skins. AMER fans unlock Venture and Sierra, EMEA fans get Freja and Hazard, and ASIA fans receive Wuyang and Juno.
The conference that finishes on top takes the bigger prize. Blizzard pointed to a special weapon charm and additional surprises appearing across maps, giving the winning region a mark that carries beyond the event window.
Busan comes next
The Cheer Rally arrives as the World Cup reaches its most important stretch in three years.
Sixteen nations travel to the Busan Esports Arena from August 20 to 23 for the Group Stage. Four groups play a single round robin, and the top two from each advance.
The surviving eight then head to the Anaheim Convention Center Arena for the Playoffs on September 12 and 13, where a single-elimination bracket decides the champion at BlizzCon 2026.
Saudi Arabia enter as reigning champions after beating China 3-2 in the 2023 final. With the rally running through both the build-up and the finals themselves, Blizzard have given players watching from home a reason to keep the broadcast open.
