Spacestation Gaming still have everything to prove in Paris
After a disappointing Champions Clash exit, Spacestation Gaming is entering the Midseason Championship looking to correct their narrative.
In Stage 1, Spacestation faced roster troubles that ultimately prevented them from having the right amount of practice and ultimately resulted in their 7th-8th exit in Tokyo. This result was not satisfactory for Head Coach Christopher "ChrisTFer" Graham, who admitted in his June 11 interview with OWTV that his vision for Stage 2 onward needed to change.
And changes were made, not with roster swaps but with individual strategy. This ultimately culminated in Kamden "Sugarfree" Hijada taking an in-game leadership role, as opposed to his solo-carry playstyle that had initially brought him much success. While there was some question about the efficacy of this strategy, the change proved successful throughout the stage.
In Stage 2, Spacestation Gaming was seen as the strongest team in North America. They started the stage out by steamrolling the Dallas Fuel 3-0, and lost only two maps in the regular season. It seemed as though finally everything had clicked; Denis "Lethal" Tari hit the ground running with Shion, the support backline returned to their 2025 form, and Sugarfree managed to handle his new responsibilities very well. This teed them up nicely as they cruised their way to the Regional Finals, losing only one map to Team Liquid in the process.
Ultimately, Spacestation found themselves once more facing the Dallas Fuel, this time entering into the match as the favourites to win. However, in what seemed to be a repeat of Stage 1, they fell 2-4 against their opponent, once more finishing in second place as they watched their rivals dismantle their new strategies.
This loss stung for Spacestation, and reinstated the gap between themselves and the Dallas Fuel. Despite the disappointing finish, Spacestation Gaming improved compared to their Stage 1 performance and are clearly a head above their regional competition, bar the Dallas Fuel.
Coming in second place, Spacestation now find themselves once more facing international competition in Paris. Yet, as Xander "Hawk" Domecq mentioned, international respect is not something Spacestation Gaming has earned. North America has continued to struggle on the world stage, and considering their performance at the Champions Clash, expectations for Spacestation Gaming are not high.
But being underestimated is something Head Coach ChrisTFer knows all too well, and something that has given his prior teams a hidden edge against even the best competition. Heading into the Midseason Championship, Spacestation Gaming has a shot at being a dark horse contender in their group, and possibly extending that should they make it to the Playoffs. If that were to happen, the team will need to utilize their practice time wisely and begin to show the world why they are worthy of respect.
Spacestation Gaming will begin their 2026 Midseason Championship campaign against JD Gaming on July 29.
